sailing and diving around the world
Hi all. We're now in Waterford, NY, just a stone's throw away from the southern gates of Lock 2. Actually, Lock 2 is the last of a series of 5 locks, known as the 'flight of locks,' in the Erie Canal System. The sequence of locks, 6 to 2, is the largest lift (170 feet) in the shortest distance (1.5 miles), of any system in the world. At this time of the year, there isn't much going on here in Waterford. The Visitor's Centre 'dock' is just to your port side as you exit lock 2. The part of the Mohawk River you'll be on is between the Visitor's Centre and Peebles Island State Park. You can walk across a bridge to get to the park. All of the amenities are within walking distance. Hannaford's, the local grocery store allows you to take their shopping carts back to the docks and they come to pick them up once a week. Free water, power, showers, etc. There are a few restaurants around that offer really cheap meals, and I mean cheap! $2 for eggs, done any way, with toast and coffee. You're really only supposed to stay for a couple of days, but no one bothers you if you stay a little longer. The volunteer staff at the Visitors Centre know you're there, but they don't really try to 'enforce the rules.' However, don't be surprised if another boater comes along and politely asks you when you plan on leaving. When this happens, it is definitely time to move on.
