So, I'm back in Madeira, with the yacht, waiting for the owners of the yacht to return so we can continue with the voyage.... Madeira to Canaries, Cape Verde Islands, and then across the Atlantic to St. Lucia. However, I still have a bunch of videos to post, from the epic land trip I just did, from Oporto, to Rome, Venice and Budapest. In preparing to upload the 'timed Rome walk,' I realized that this would also be a good opportunity to do a little video of Aki Kalheta, the restaurant, here in Calheta Marina, that I've been using as my 'home base,' so to speak. I always find a great place, with great owners and staff, where I can set up my laptop once in a while, have meals, etc, and this is the place here in the marina. Joe is the owner, and he's got the place loaded with great people for staff. As I've said in previous videos, in other countries/ports/marinas that I've spent time in, as long as you're friendly, polite, and you're having some of your meals and purchasing coffees, etc, most restaurant owners are quite happy for you to use the wifi and to set up with your laptop somewhere in a corner of the restaurant and plug in. In fact, if you're in a marina, most of the restaurant owners expect that you'll come off the boat to eat, drink, and set up your laptop and use their wifi. So, Aki Kalheta is my fabulous spot here. I'm often waiting for Joe, in the morning, to show up and open the cafe and get the espresso machine going. I always have a 'Sheeneza,' which is the Madeiran way of asking for a coffee with milk. I'm addicted to the stuff now. I swear I must have six of them a day! :) I've already tried a variety of the dishes they offer, and they're all good. Birgit recommended the Espetada and the Picado and, as usual, she was spot on. The Espetada is skewers of meat, done to your liking, served with salad, etc, and the Picado, also a meat dish, is served with French fries and a mushroom sauce. Sooooo good! The pizza is always a treat, and I've often seen Joe in the kitchen, making the pizzas, himself. Joe is an avid walker/climber of the hills and mountains of Madeira, so if you need any recommendations about any of the walks, he's the guy to talk to about that, too. Jessica also knows a lot about the island, and she's recommended a couple of cool driving routes for me.
