sailing and diving around the world
As you guys who have been following me and watching my videos know, you've seen that sometimes there seems to be someone 'waiting' for me, in some of the cities and marinas that I go to. When I 'need' to have someone around me or with me, someone always seems to appear to 'watch over me.' I feel like I have angels watching over me. In this case, the person that was 'waiting' for me, truly is an angel, and her name is Bridgette. Bridgette owns and runs one of the shops her in Calheta marina, and I first spoke to her when I walked over to her shop and inquired about cargo shorts for men. She was a sweetheart, and I connected with her right away. She's a deeply intuitive and kind person, like me, and has a huge heart. She told me to let her know if there is anything I need, or any info I need to know about the island, and she's been spot on with everything I've inquired about. She also told me about her husband who is a pilot. But I didn't understand her, and I thought she meant her husband, Bjorn, was a jet pilot.
I'm back in Madeira now, after my epic, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants European city adventure. I did Oporto, Rome, Venice, and Budapest. When I got back, Bridgette was still in Germany. She had also flown out of Madeira for the holidays, but when she returned she was with her husband, Bjorn, another guy who is one of the coolest guys I've ever met. After chatting with her and Bjorn for a bit, I found out that she told me that Bjorn is a Ship's Pilot. For those of you who are sailors, and those of you who just know about really cool stuff, you've heard 'white over red, pilot ahead." :):) When you see a masthead light on a vessel, to all-round lights, the top one white and the lower one red, it's a vessel that transports pilots to those huge vessels that need to enter the harbor. Bjorn is one of those guys you see doing those death-defying climbs up those rope ladders hanging down from the side of those enormous cargo vessels and tankers. When one of those huge vessels requires a pilot, Bjorn is taken out to the vessel, sometimes even by helicopter, and he goes into the ship's pilothouse and basically takes command of the helm, instructing one of the ship's officers on how to navigate the vessel into port safely. Very cool job for a very cool guy. Being a sailor myself, I understand the job he does, it's value, and I'm a little in awe, actually. Like Bridgette, he's got a heart of gold and generously offered for me to join him for a few epic drives and walks across the island of Madeira. So we've done a few spectacular drives and walks, and here are some videos from two of the walks. For those of you who love to walk, or are hikers, or even die-hard mountain trekkers, this is the island for you :):):)
In video 4, Bjorn was a good sport and he repeated something that I asked him to, "....a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do...." Made me laugh, cuz he sounds exactly like Schwarzenegger sometimes, because although Bjorn speaks perfect English, he speaks it with a pretty strong German accent :) Just don't know if you guys can hear him saying it, though.
